Son of Hera — or of Hera alone, depending on the myth — Hephaestus was thrown from Olympus as an infant, either by his mother who found him ugly, or by Zeus during a quarrel. He fell for a full day and landed on the island of Lemnos, where he built his forge. From that forge came Achilles' immortal armor, Hermes' winged sandals, Zeus's thunderbolts, Helios's chariot, and the golden automata that served as his assistants. He was rejected by Olympus and built his way back, one masterpiece at a time.
