Art has always held a special place in my life.
A constant companion that has guided me through both good times and bad. Music, Drawing, Painting, Pottery, Cardboard creations, Lego/K-Nex/Erector building sets? You name it. I loved to create and build.
My journey with art began in childhood, sparked by simple yet profound moments. Watching my sister masterfully blend colors in a coloring book was my first glimpse into the world of art. She would carefully color within the lines, creating beautiful gradients and bringing our favorite Disney characters to life. This, combined with the captivating storylines of video games like Final Fantasy, ignited in me a lifelong passion for art and storytelling.
These early experiences led me to join the middle school art club, a decision that would shape much of my future. In this club, art became more than a hobby; it became a sanctuary. Here, I learned about various forms of art, but more importantly, I learned about myself. It was a place where I could create, share, and heal. Despite occasional disagreements with our teacher, I now realize these experiences only deepened my love for art, encouraging me to explore it further in high school and college.
However, life wasn't always kind. I went through tough times, struggling with misdiagnoses and surrounded by an environment that didn’t prioritize mental health or emotional support. It wasn't until my early 30s that I discovered I had Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) stemming from earlier life experiences. This revelation was both shocking and enlightening, akin to someone with undiagnosed Diabetes finally understanding their condition. During those dark times, art, along with the support of friends, therapists, my children, and a higher power, became a beacon of hope and strength. It rekindled my lost passions, giving me a way to cope, heal, and grow.
Art, for me, is much more than aesthetics; it's a language of the soul. It's about expressing emotions, being present in the moment, and connecting with others. Original art, in particular, carries a unique energy and memory – a stark contrast to the lifeless feel of mass-produced prints. This realization about art's profound impact led me to view artists as modern-day alchemists. Whether a writer, a carpenter, or a singer, artists have the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Investing in art became a key aspect of my journey. It's about supporting creativity, expression, and sometimes, an artist’s livelihood. When considering art investment, it's important to think about the piece’s ability to enhance your space, its alignment with your personal style, and the potential to support emerging talent. Art is a timeless treasure, a legacy that speaks across generations.
As I continue to navigate the intricacies of life, art remains my guiding light. It's more than a pastime; it's a lifeline that has helped me weather the storms of life. I hope my story inspires others to find their own healing brushstrokes in whatever form they may take.
